Card Scanner
Whether from a networking event or your decades-old rolodex, business cards still are a common way to exchange contact information. Dex makes it seamless to work with (and digitize) business cards.
- From Dex mobile app home screen, tap the burger icon (bottom right of the screen) and select 'Scan Card'.
- We'll automatically read and detect card information, and pre-fill a form you can submit and edit.
- A picture of the business card will also be saved to the new contact -- you'll always have a record.
What's New
We've completely rebuilt business card scanning across iPhone and Android:
- Faster and more reliable: scanning is quicker and detection is more accurate.
- Much more stable on Android, where the old scanner was prone to crashing mid-scan.
- Near-instant results: new contacts and scanned card images now appear almost immediately instead of taking minutes to sync.
Scanning Several Cards in a Row
At a conference? After saving one card, you can go straight back into the scanner instead of returning to your contact list. Each contact saves and syncs in the background while you keep scanning.
Getting the Best Results
- Light it evenly: bright, diffuse light beats direct light, which creates glare that hides text.
- Use a plain background: a table works better than your hand or a patterned surface.
- Fill the frame: get close enough that the card fills most of the viewfinder, but keep all four edges visible.
- Hold steady: wait for the camera to focus before capturing.
- Flip it over: if contact details are on the back, scan that side too.
Scanning Offline
If you scan without a connection, the contact is saved locally and syncs once you're back online. The card image uploads at the same time.
Troubleshooting
- The scanner won't open: Dex needs camera permission. On iPhone, go to Settings → Dex → Camera. On Android, Settings → Apps → Dex → Permissions → Camera.
- The scanner crashed (Android): this was a known issue on older versions and is fixed in the rebuilt scanner. Update Dex from Google Play.
- The card image hasn't uploaded: images upload in the background and need a connection. If you scanned offline, it'll upload once you reconnect.
- It created a duplicate: open either record and merge them, keeping whichever details you prefer.
