When you connect this feature, Dex will sync all your phone call history and create a dedicated group to help you stay organized and never miss an important contact again.

How Phone Call Sync Works

Initial Setup

When you first connect Phone Call Sync, the Dex desktop app performs a complete sync of all your phone call interactions. This includes:

  • All incoming and outgoing calls from your call history
  • Contact information from your phone's address book

Automatic Organization

  • Phone Call Contacts Group: All synced contacts are automatically organized into a special group called "Phone Call Contacts" with a 📞 emoji, making it easy to find and manage these contacts
  • Smart Contact Creation: New contacts are automatically created in your Dex account if they don't already exist, so you'll never lose track of someone you've spoken with
  • Duplicate Prevention: The system intelligently prevents duplicate contacts by matching phone numbers and email addresses

Continuous Updates

  • Real-time Sync: Your contacts are automatically updated whenever you make or receive calls, ensuring your Dex account always reflects your latest interactions
  • Hourly Background Sync: The desktop app runs a sync every hour to catch any missed interactions, as long as your computer is connected to the internet
  • Recent Call Focus: During hourly syncs, the system focuses on calls from the last 24 hours to keep your data fresh and up-to-date

Privacy and Security

  • Local Processing: All call history processing happens locally on your computer - your personal call data never leaves your device unnecessarily
  • Secure Sync: Only contact information and interaction timestamps are synced to your Dex account, maintaining your privacy while keeping you organized

What you need

Call history lives on macOS, so this sync runs only in the Mac version of the Dex desktop app. There is no Windows, web, or mobile equivalent, and the connect button stays greyed out in a browser.

Sync happens inside the Dex desktop app itself. The standalone Dex Sync Utility that earlier versions asked you to download has been retired, and its old download link now sends you to the desktop app.

Getting Started

Install the Dex desktop app

Go to Settings → Download → Desktop app and install it on the Mac that holds your call history.

Open Sync & Integrations and connect Phone Calls

Go to Settings → Workflow → Sync & Integrations, find Phone Calls, and click Connect Phone.

Grant Full Disk Access to Dex

Dex needs macOS Full Disk Access to read your call history. iMessage Sync uses the same permission, so if you have already granted it, skip to the next step.

macOS has no pop-up for Full Disk Access. The Open System Settings button opens the settings pane and stops there, so expect no dialog after you click it. You grant the permission yourself in the pane it opens.

In System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access, switch Dex on.

Quit Dex completely and reopen it

macOS only applies Full Disk Access to a relaunched process. Closing the window is not enough. Quit Dex fully, then open it again, and the sync will start.

Once enabled, Phone Call Sync works quietly in the background, keeping your Dex account organized and up-to-date with your phone interactions. You'll find all your phone call contacts neatly organized in the "Phone Call Contacts" group, making it easy to stay in touch with everyone you've spoken with.
