Importing from Facebook

Start importing your Facebook contacts with Dex, complete with birthdays!

When you import from Facebook, you can:

Import birthdays: stay informed about upcoming birthdays and receive notifications for contacts you care about.
Facebook Profile Images: enhance your Dex contacts with profile pictures from Facebook.

Before you begin:

Download and install the Dex for Chrome extension.

To import from Facebook with the Dex Extension, you must be using Google Chrome.

Start the import from the Import tab

Open Dex in the same browser and go to Settings → Workflow → Sync & Import/Export, then open the Import tab. Find Facebook friends, click Import, then Import from Facebook.

If the extension isn't installed, Dex shows The Dex browser extension is required with an Add to Chrome button.
After confirming, the Dex extension starts the import. It usually takes a minute or two, and you can close the window while it runs.

The Dex desktop app can't run browser extensions, so it shows Import from Facebook in your browser instead, with a link to open in Chrome. Run the import from there.

Dex reads your Facebook birthday calendar once and adds the people on it as contacts, with their names, birthdays and profile images. All of your information is private only to you, and you can delete your data at any time.

Completing the import process

When the import finishes, Dex shows Facebook import complete and puts everyone it brought in into a group called Facebook Friends.

If you run the import process more than once, existing contacts will not be duplicated (and will instead be updated).

We recommend archiving instead of deleting Facebook contacts if you like to import from Facebook regularly.

Why do I have fewer contacts in Dex than friends on Facebook?

Because Dex builds them from your birthday calendar rather than from your friends list. Anyone whose birthday Facebook doesn't show you never reaches that calendar, so they never reach Dex either. A number well below your friend count is normal and doesn't mean the import failed.

Dex reads the calendar a year at a time, covering the twelve months of the current year.

Does Facebook keep syncing after the import?

No. The Facebook import runs once, when you click Import. Dex doesn't go back to Facebook on its own afterwards, so birthdays added on Facebook later don't reach Dex by themselves.

To pick them up, run the import again. On the Import tab, click Remove on the Facebook friends row, confirm, then click Import. Removing the import keeps the friends and birthdays already in Dex, in your Facebook Friends group, and running it again updates them without creating duplicates.

Can I see my Facebook or Messenger messages in Dex?

No. The Facebook connection reads your birthday calendar, and nothing else. Your Facebook conversations and Messenger chats are not imported, are not synced, and never appear on a contact's timeline.

What the Facebook import does bring across:

Friends from your birthday calendar as contacts, with their names and profile images
Birthdays, which then feed your birthday reminders and digests
Profile details picked up from the profile page when you add someone with the Dex extension

There is no Facebook message sync in Dex, on web or on mobile, and no way to read a Messenger conversation from inside Dex. To record what you discussed with someone, add a note to their timeline yourself.

Dex does sync messages from some other channels — see WhatsApp, iMessage and Instagram.
