Conversation Memory
Most of your relationships happen in your messages. With Conversation Memory, Dex now keeps track of what you actually talked about, right on each contact's timeline.
Every night, Dex reads the day's conversations and adds a short note (one to three sentences) to each contact's timeline. The next morning, you'll get an email listing which notes were added.
How Conversation Memory Works
- Works with WhatsApp, iMessage, LinkedIn, and Instagram.
- Starts from when it's turned on. Older message history isn't summarized.
- Skips chats with nothing worth saving, like "ok" or "👍".
- Automatically created notes are regular notes, so you can edit, delete, or search them. Dex's AI also uses them to give you better summaries and suggestions.
- Each morning, you'll get an email mentioning which notes were added.
Getting Started
Conversation Memory is on by default. It only needs a messaging app to read from, so connect at least one in Settings → Workflow → Sync & Integrations:
- WhatsApp Sync
- iMessage Sync (Mac only, through the Dex desktop app)
- LinkedIn Sync
- Instagram Sync
Notes start appearing the morning after your first conversations.
Turning Conversation Memory On or Off
Go to Settings → Automation. There are two switches:
- Conversation Memory turns the nightly notes on or off.
- The email turns only the morning email on or off. Notes keep being added to your timelines without it.
The setting may still be labeled Conversation summaries in your app.
Frequently Asked Questions
Dex leaves out conversations that don't have anything worth remembering. That includes short exchanges ("ok", "👍", "thanks!"), reactions and attachments on their own, newsletters, and automated messages like delivery updates or verification codes. WhatsApp voice notes aren't summarized either.
A note also needs a contact to go on. If the person you were chatting with isn't in Dex, or matches more than one contact (a possible duplicate), the conversation may be skipped. Merging the duplicates fixes that for future conversations.
Yes, for small groups. WhatsApp, iMessage, and LinkedIn group chats with up to about five people get a note. Larger groups and communities are skipped, so you don't get notes about people you barely know. Instagram covers one-on-one chats only.
A group note is added only to the contacts who actually sent messages that day.
