Desktop App

The Dex desktop app for Mac and Windows gives you the full Dex workspace in its own window and keeps LinkedIn, iMessage and phone call syncs running in the background.

The Dex desktop app puts your Dex workspace in its own window on Mac or Windows, so your network is never more than a click away. It is also where Dex's background syncs live: LinkedIn connections and messages on both platforms, and iMessage and phone calls on Mac.

Available on: macOS and Windows

Download the desktop app

Get it from getdex.com/desktop and choose Download for Mac or Download for Windows. You can also open the download link from the menu in the top right of the Dex web app, or from Settings → Download → Desktop app.

Sign in with the same account you use on the web and mobile apps. Your contacts, notes and settings are the same everywhere.

What the desktop app adds

The desktop app gives you the same workspace as the Dex web app, including Voice Mode for Professional subscribers. On top of that, the desktop app runs syncs that a browser tab can't:

SyncMacWindowsDetails
LinkedIn Sync✅✅Connections and messages, synced in the background
iMessage Sync✅—Reads your Messages history locally on your Mac
Phone Call Sync✅—Reads your call history locally on your Mac

iMessage and phone call history only exist on macOS, so those two syncs have no Windows, web or mobile equivalent.

Background syncing

The desktop app keeps syncing without a window open, and catches up automatically when your computer wakes from sleep. Your computer needs to be online for a sync to run.

You can close the window, but don't quit the app

Closing the Dex window is fine. The app keeps running in the background and the syncs carry on.

Quitting it stops syncing until you open Dex again. On a Mac that means Cmd + Q or Dex → Quit. Nothing is lost while it is closed, and the next run picks up what it missed.

Tray menu

The desktop app has a tray menu (the menu bar on Mac). Use Sync LinkedIn Connections there to pull your LinkedIn connections right away instead of waiting for the next cycle.

Replacing the Dex Sync Utility

The desktop app replaces the standalone Dex Sync Utility that earlier versions of Dex asked you to download. The utility has been retired, and its old download link now sends you to the desktop app.

If the utility is still installed on your Mac, move it to the Trash. Left in place, it reads the same message and call databases as the desktop app and does the work twice.
